Success Story: Mary Margaret Stoll

Discovering a passion and talent for experimental science, Mary Margaret shows off the results of her hard work to her peers in the CREST-REU program at UMass Boston. Mary Margaret worked in Dr. Hannigan’s ocean acidification laboratory where she experimentally dosed tanks with different amounts of carbon dioxide to drop the pH to predicted future conditions in the ocean. In the tanks were tiny, head of a pin-sized, larval blue mussels. She grew them under experimental conditions then assessed changes in growth and shell mineralogy. She will be submitting her summer REU research for publication in Fall 2015 and, we hope, coming back to UMass Boston for graduate school!
