Success Story: Denzell Cross

In the summer of 2011 Denzell Cross, a sophomore at Norfolk State University, VA, spent the summer at UMass Boston working with Dr. Alan Christian on a stream habitat restoration response project. Even though Denzell was not familiar with restoration and water quality issues, Denzell applied his plant biology experience and implemented it in assessing restoration success by designing a study using aquatic plants as habitat and water quality indicator. Denzell also was the co-winner of the best laboratory notebook at the end of the UMass Boston CREST REU summer. Denzell indicated that his summer REU experience has stirred his passion for environmental science and wants to pursue a graduate degree in environmental science.
